This is the place to discuss SpecWeb 1.5

SpecWeb can be downloaded here http://www.surroundbyus.com/sbu/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=913

One thing that didn't make it in this first version of the guide is some details around connected with a remote browser.

If you drag and drop a file on the "SpecWeb Play Remote" shortcut, SpecWeb will open and say:

Quote:
http://GATEWAY-WIN8:7681

Waiting for external web connection

where "GATEWAY-WIN8" is the name of your computer. http://GATEWAY-WIN8:7681 would then be the address to enter into a remote browser in order to connect.

Two things to be aware of:

1) The first time you run SpecWeb the windows firewall (or your firewall/security software) should have asked to allow access for SpecWeb. If you failed to say "yes" you'll need to add a rule allowing SpecWeb to use TCP port 7681 (or whatever port you want it to run on, using the -n flag).

2) Depending on the setup of your home network, other computers and devices may not know the ip address for your computer by its name. In that case you'll need to substitute the ip address of your computer, running SpecWeb, for the computers name in the URL, like this:

Quote:
http://192.168.1.10:7681

Image

above is an image from an iPhone of the SpecWeb html5 interface. The address used was actually:

Quote:
http://192.168.102.234:7681

but the browser isn't showing the :7681 port number.

Cheers,
Z

Another item that didn't make it in the first version of the guide.

There are some (malformed) flac files that SpecWeb won't read. If you get the error:

Quote:
File contains data in an unknown format

yet other flac players like foobar2000 can play it, it may have an "id3" tag in it (which is not valid for flac files).

You can remove the offending id3 tag to get the files working in SpecWeb (and not lose tag info).

One such (free) tool:

MusicBrainz Picard
Under Tools | Options | Tags, be sure to check the option "Remove ID3 tags from FLAC files".
View the File Browser window. Drag and drop from there to the center pane.
Ensure all files are loaded - when they are, the "Pending Files" note in the lower right corner will read "0", and all the files in the center pane will be black rather than greyed out.
Click the Cluster button on the toolbar (this may not be necessary, but it's quick)
Select all files in the center pane (Ctrl+A), right click one, and choose "Save"

The files I came across with id3 tags were also marked "read only", in windows security options, so I had to fix that first, then was able to "save" with Picard and fix the tags.

Another tip:

If you hear a "swishing" noise or other "artifacts" these can be reduced or eliminated by resampling you song files by 2x or greater.

For example, resample a 44.1Khz 16bit song to 88.2Khz 24 bits, run through SpecWeb, then (optionally) resample to the resulting multichannel file back to 44.1Khz (but keep the 24 bits).

Also, it is suggested you use these FFT sizes (or FFT sample size) depending on the sample rate of your input song:

44.1 or 48Khz source use 8192 FFT size (-N8192)
88.2 or 96Khz source use 16384 FFT size (-N16384)
176 or 192Khz source use 32768 FFT size (-N32768)

User HomerJAU over on the QuadrophonicQuad forum, has made a really great (and free) "helper app" for SpecWeb.

List of Helper features (on top of SpecWeb features):

Option to Over Sample original stereo files (reduces some known artefacts on lower sample rate files) - creates a copy at 24bit 176.4 or 192kHz of the source stereo file used by SpecWeb
Option to Re-sample the MCH output file file back to its original stereo/source sample rate, or leave at above over-sampled rate or save at hi-rez 88.2 or 96kHz
Option to create MCH files in Source folder (SpecWeb's default), Save to 'parallel' folder (next to original but new folder renamed with '(upmix)' suffix), or to a User defined folder (all set in Helper Preferences).
Add multiple files for conversion by selecting just their Parent folder (all files in that folder are added for conversion - i.e. all files from the album folder)
Add multiple folders (as above) for batch conversion of multiple albums (select one at a time but convert all)
No limit to the number of files you can add the the 'convert list' (limited by hard disc space of the output folder's drive)
Option to re-tag the MCH files 'Album name' with a user defined suffix (e.g. '(upmix)') to differentiate original stereo album from MCH version in music playing progs (Foobar etc)
Helper also tags the MCH files with 'Album Artist'
Option to tag the new MCH files with any album art (named: folder.jpg) found in the source (stereo) folder

and maybe more by the time you read this.

Check it out: http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/showthread.php?21622-QQ-SpecWeb-Helper-App

and a big thanks to HomerJAU and all our friends over at QuadrophonicQuad!

Dave,

What size is your screen?

That error message is trying to set the size of the SpecWeb window.
