do you really think that would sound better than just listening to the stereo, though? i've some listening before and perhaps there's a bit more width and feeling of space in the mix, but I just wonder whether you're better off listening to a stereo mix than a mixdown when dealing with two channels. i'll allow for Z to answer the rest of your question....

Yes no guarantee it will sound as good as the stereo but one simple approach is foobar 2000.

With the dts decoder component foobar can decode DTS to 5.1 channels, then, in the DSP manager you can add "convert 5.1 to stereo" and presto 2 ch. stereo.

Thing is i have all this music that was given to me in DTS, but no way to listen to it, which is why I want to try and convert. Is there an OS X compatible version to foobar 2000? I'm on a Mac and foobar isn't made for macs at this time.

as you're looking for simple solution, you can try VLC media player....very nice player, i really like!
playing 5.1 files, adjust in audio menu the desired output between: 5.1, 2Fronts&2back, stereo or Mono.

(list of capable audio formats: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.php?cat=audio )
